Why didn't they start a fire the second they learned it liked heat?

Seriously.

reply

That would have made sense and in this movie common sense is not allowed.

Partially cause fire is dangerous to us, why set a fire in attempt to help yourself only for it to end up being your undoing as well? Also I think the creature didn't so much "like heat" but used as a way to find its next feeding source, so I think it would only take a matter of time and a bit of trail and error for the creature to find out that the fire wasn't a feeding source.

A boat that floats on water can also sink in it.

They were in a gas station and they pretty much did use fire (crackers) to get it's attention straight away.

This was probably my biggest gripe, too. If the splinters are attracted to heat sources, just set a fire and let it dive in and immolate itself. High temperatures clearly aren't a problem because the main monster was all over the fireworks, which burn very hot, so there's no reason they couldn't have a) set a fire and let it commit suicide or b) lured it out with fireworks and doused it with the lighter fluid.

They were actually trying to set a fire (to the forest) but the "biology doctor" stopped them.

Yup - which is why it made no sense that they didn't go back to that idea after they found out it liked heat. At least to distract it while they made a run for the car...
