origin of the monsters and its irony

At the beginning of the film the camera lingers on a sign that's says:MID-STATE OIL INC. Experimental extraction Field Site. What would a oil company and a killer mutant fungus have in common? Easy. The development of biofuels. The fungus they where developing to use as a fossil fuel substitute(like the experiments done on algae today) turned deadly in the ultimate irony of man destroying the world in an attempt to save it. Did anyone else pick up on that?

Yes.

Notice how the byproduct of the "creature" feeding is also oil, implying that oil is actually created at the time these creatures roamed the earth and fed.

Applied Science? All science is applied. Eventually.

Interesting - I picked up on "oh look, an oil company is trying to pull the sticky crap out of the earth using an "experimental extraction" technique....instead, they pull this thing out...or create it using this "new and improved" method." Biofuels seems to be a bit of a leap...
