When is this coming out?????
I've heard nothing on it. Does anyone know?
There is no informations about a relaese date
shareHopefully early in 2009.
shareWell I hope so. I've been waiting to see this for quite some time.
shareHi, Kpefkaros-1. I have just spoken to someone at the production company and apparently the film was very well received last Sunday, 26th, at the Rome Film Festival. There was a screening and I am now waiting for the press reviews to be forwarded to me (most in Italian, I gather). When I have some more news, I will let you know. Hopefully, we will get the film early next year in England.
shareThanks for the update. I'm in the States. San Francisco to be exact. I've been hoping this would be coming here for some time as I am a big Hemingway reader.
shareThanks for the note. To the best of my knowledge the film has been viewed by Sam Goldwyn, after previews in Pasadena. He has requested the film be changed slightly, which it has, and I think the production company is now waiting to hear from him if he is going to arrange distribution through Miramax. I will let you know when I know more myself. All the best to you. M
shareDoes anyone have any up to date news on this as I telephoned the production company (Berwick Street Productions: - www.berwickstreetproductions.co.uk/) before Christmas and they told me that the film had been shown at a film festival in Rome or Milan ,I think, and they were making good progress for a general release in 2009. They also said a newsletter was being issued the following week regarding the film but I have not seen one.
I am going to contact them again and if anyone else wants to do so here are their contact details:-

I received a message today from Berwick Street Productions that a newsletter will be sent to me next week. When I have any more information I will let you know.
shareThank you for sharing your news about the movie. I can't wait to see it because i'm a huge fan of mena suvari and i like the book a lot.I hope the movie comes out soon.
shareHaving contacted Berwick Street productions yesterday they tell me the newsletter is going out next Monday - I also contacted Devonshire productions and they tell me matters are progressing so lets hope the whole film is not affected by the credit crunch. Apparently, the original distributors Omega are not acting now.
shareI received a newsletter today regarding The Garden of Eden. Apparently the film is to be re-edited for the American market, by Ann Coates, one of the world's top editors. Also Ian Jessel, ex Miramax, has been engaged to assist on the marketing of the film. The plan is now to appoint both European and American distributors and hopefully release the film by late 2009.
share'Re-edited'... that sounds ominous. What's a bet they have to cut a lot of content out to get it a decent rating/release?
shareAs far as I know the editing is for the American audience, not the British one. It is a fabulous film, with the most wonderful photography. Hopefully, the film will come out here any time after September. I am waiting for the next update.
shareIn the screening i saw in LA of this film it was so bad that 1/2 way thru when the projector stopped people cheered b/c they thought it was over. Then, when it came back on everyone boo'd because they had to sit thru the rest of the film.
shareI can only think you saw a different film to that which I saw. I thought it was brilliantly acted, the photography was totally stunning and with two previews with totally full London Odeon Theatres, the general consensus of opinion was that the film was marvellous.
shareI'm really excited about this film, particularly after seeing the trailer in which the photography looked every bit as good as you suggest. I'm also a big fan of Caterina Murino. Please could you tell me a little more of what she was like in the film? This also seems to be more erotic than anything that I can remember her doing before when she's been fairly guarded about nudity. Is she more relaxed about it in the Garden of Eden?
shareNice to hear from you and to know that someone appreciates the photography. I don't think I have seen a film with more stunning scenes in it and I am a very critical person.
Caterina Murino was brilliant. I actually said hello to her at the reception after the showing in London last year. She deserves an Oscar for her performance and yes, there is loads of nudity throughout the film. Personally, my only criticism is that there are too many sex scenes, but then that is Ernest Hemingway. Even the opening scenes are extremely erotic. You will love the film when it is released.
Thanks for the information. It's great to hear such a positive opinion of Caterina's performance. I'm sure I will love the film, especially as I'm a sucker for something that's beautifully shot and even more so when the drama and performances match up as well. Let's hope that it reaches the UK (and as many other countries as possible) later this year! :-)

Here's a link to a Caterina Murino website showing the trailer:

Thanks for the link alex.
I've long wondered why it is that we haven't seen a successful adaptation of a major work by Hemingway in 50+ years and was really excited when I heard about this. The trailer looks great, I just hope they get a distribution deal together so we can finally lay eyes on it. I'm excited.
Thanks for posting the trailer. I've been waiting for this for years!
Looks good. They really pegged the actors well.
Anyone recognize the song that plays during the last 40 seconds of the trailer?
sharecome on, almost 2 years the shooting is over and no release date. I'm fed up of waiting. what's going on?
shareDidn't someone say they'd be releasing it over this summer?
BTW trailer's awesome. Another success for John Irvin.
Has anybody got any up to date news on the release date?
share
December 10th in USA. Released by Roadside Attractions (Part owned by Lionsgate) There is a rumor that the movie is being submitted for an Oscar! BTW, the score is absolutely beautiful.
Delighted to hear that the film is finally going to be released. I think that it is a fantastically made film, the photography is amazing and definitely it should be up for an Oscar.
The same producer and a couple of the cast are now making "The Hot Potato", a British comedy caper, based on a true story. It should be absolutely superb and so keep your eyes and ears open for it next year. Check it out on Wardour Pictures.

The last I heard was that the movie was being re-edited and no other news since a newsletter was sent out to investors a few months back - may be worth contacting Berwick Street Productions again for an update?
sharecome on almost 2 years and no release date. What's going on with this movie do you have any idea. I hope the movie is out before the end of the year.
shareBased on what some people have said on this board, it will likely be out this year.
Hopefully one of these days finally puts Irvin into a little more prominence.
Today I spoke to someone about The Garden of Eden and it appears that the film had to be changed for the American market. No more changes are now to be made, dvd's have been made and sent to distributors. Hopefully the film will be released at the end of 2009.
shareI have seen one of the two previews in London last year. Any idea how radical the changes; and as you mention dvds, are we saying that there will not be a cinema release?
shareSorry, I do not know what changes were made. The dvd's are purely for the distributors, so they can view the film. The film will go into cinemas as soon as distributors are set up. All should be ok by the end of this year, that is what I was told yesterday.
shareThanks for the update! Let's hope that we see something by the end of the year then :-)
shareKeep fingers crossed.
shareUPDATE - HOT NEWS
Have just heard that the film has been further improved by Anna Coates, one of the finest film editors in the world (Lawrence of Arabia/Erin Brockovich etc.). The film is now complete and Ian Jessell, who is sales agent for Berwick Street Productions in America,is busy selling the film globally.
That's brilliant! I can't wait! :-)
shareAm now getting all excited as final stages are being reached. The cinematography was brilliant on the original version - if Anna Coates edited Lawrence of Arabia with its stunning scenes, then it may have even improved.
shareA release date please I'm fed up of waiting
shareYeah me too. John Irvin is a good director, and the trailer looks interesting.
shareA newsletter has just been sent out from Berwick Street Productions saying that the editing of the film was completed on 8th September 2009 and since that date they have been in negotiations with a UK and European sales agent.
The film was screened by the agency 5 weeks ago and they have come back with a very positive response and they are currently waiting for their proposal for distribution of the film and the final negotiations will rest with Tranquil Seas.
Their American representative has also screened the film to several US distributors and they are endeavouring to get a theatrical release in the US.
Further positive news is expected in the next 6 - 8 weeks.Everything is being done to secure the right distribution contract apparently
Finally! Glad to hear that the film might actually get a theatrical release (as long as it's not cut down to the censor's choosing- leave a Hemmingway book like it is).
Thanks for the news! At least we have some sort of timeline now. With any luck we'll be able to see the film by next spring!
shareWill it finally be relased in 2010?
shareI suppose it'll be released this spring. About time, really.
sharealmost 3 years and nothing unbelievable
shareIs there any news on this?
share3 years unbelievable what a waste of time. I wonder why there is no release date maybe the movie is so bad that it can't be see
shareI have tried speaking to Berwick Street Productions for an up date since which time I been sent the DVD and will write a review soon. It's great by the way. Anyone desperate to get a DVD could contact Tim Lewiston at Wardour Pictures
shareCan you write a review of the film?
shareI am in the middle of doing this but I want to get it right because of the fact it was a Hemingway book and also I would like to be as objective as possible. Suffice to say that it was beautifully filmed, the locations superb and the costumes and props stunning whilst at the same time I do not wish to give too much away because I believe that as and when it goes on general release it could attract a cult following.
shareDid they give any news on when a DVD release is coming out?
shareThey want a theatrical release first - I understand they now have a European distributor and are still awaiting a US one
shareHi falcradine,
I contacted Wardour Pictures but they said that the DVD was only being complementarily issued to investors in The Garden of Eden; also Tim Lewiston had become fed up (like the rest of us!) with the failure to secure a release and they didn't see a release happening any time soon due to an ineffective sales agent.
Would you be able/allowed to run a copy of your DVD and if so how much should I pay as I am desperate to see the film? I live in the UK so would need Region 2. Three years' waiting with little hope on the horizon is pretty frustrating.
Thanks
Have just heard that the contract for distribution is now signed and the film will be released in America in the last quarter of this year.
The newsletter will be on the Berwick Street Productions website in the next few days
mena says on her twiter that the movie is out in october in america but in europe no idea
shareIt will probably get a limited release in the States. If it's anything like Hemingway's book, it'll be challenging the MPAA system as well as the general audience's apathy.
shareaccording her twitter she says the movie is out 10 th december in usa
shareWell spotted - here is her entry on twitter:
'HEMINGWAYS GARDEN OF EDEN' will be coming out December 10th in limited markets...more deets to ... http://tmi.me/1BnCp
