This is not a "retcon"

Anyone who was expecting this to be "Toy Story 5" is going to be confused and disappointed.

In Toy Story it is implied that "Buzz" is an existing character from a movie, TV series or perhaps a comic book. The "Al's Toy Barn" commercial says "get your Buzz Lightyear action figure..." implying this is a merchandising tie-in to something popular with kids. The "Buzz Lightyear" in Toy Story is the toy featured in the ad.

This film is about "Buzz Lightyear" the character upon which the action figure is based.

Viewers will get more enjoyment out of the movie if they can get past this confusion.

... and past the Evans-instead-of-Allen thing. And other stuff ...

reply

Yes, some fans are upset just because Tim Allen isn't providing the voice. These are two different characters.

reply

See, the thing is, when a character from a movie or a television show gets a toy action figure made out of them, particularly a talking action figure/doll, the voice is almost always the same. So that means that Tim Allen should have voiced this character, period.

reply

exactly. Evans was cast instead due to his popularity as Cap America and apparently Tim Allen does the occastinal dodgy tweet

reply

I honestly don't understand why anyone would care about that. In live action movies or TV shows, I can understand being upset when an actor is replaced by another one - but in animation? It makes zero difference.

reply

Voices aren't a distinct identifier for you? Makes a big difference to many. Sometimes I don't care but half the time I do. Replacing original Harley actress voice was jarring to me. I don't expect that I would care in this if I planned on seeing it. I never even saw the 3rd Toy Story. I get how lots of people don't like it. And that has nothing to do with the juxtaposition of the actors' likeability (although that may be some people's reason).

All depends on a person's taste but "zero difference" is not a strong case for the prosecution.

reply

On a long-running animated TV show like The Simpsons, yes, changing the voice of any of the main characters would be jarring and I can understand how fans would be upset. Hell, I didn't like it when they changed Dr. Hibbert's voice recently, and that's a minor character. But in five movies made decades apart? I don't get it.

reply

That's a little better.

However, you said "I didn't like it when they changed Dr. Hibbert's voice" yet don't understand it when others (a vast group) don't like the new Buzz voice based on your own criteria. Surely you understand why people care given your personal experience.

reply

Because Dr. Hibbert is a character that I have been watching on a regular basis for thirty years, so I KNOW what he sounds like. Buzz Lightyear is a character I have seen maybe seven or eight times since 1995, so when a new movie comes out I don't even remember what he used to sound like.

*** Edit ***

At the risk of contradicting myself, it just occurred to me that if they changed the voice of Gru from the Despicable Me/Minions movies, I would probably not like it either - but in the case of that character it's more than just the voice, there is a whole manner of speaking and accent that makes it very distinct, which I don't remember being the case with Buzz Lightyear (or Woody, for that matter).

reply

OK. I believe you. You really don't understand.

reply

Because it's become a political thing, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. 100% these people are mad because Tim Allen is an outspoken right winger, and Chris Evans is an outspoken liberal. They see it as liberal Hollywood "canceling" someone with a different opinion, which is not even remotely the reason they got a new voice actor.
