Anna and Sarah

Martyrs (2008) questions

The film is not new and much has been written about it. I would like to share some of the questions that I have about certain details of this film.

1. A woman (Sarah) in a metal "helmet" and "chastity belt". Is this chastity belt real? Does this indicate that the “martyrs”, according to the sectarians, should be virgins?

2. The phrase said on the phone about Anna: "She looks freed." What did Anna get rid of? From pain, fear, from myself?

3. Anna's body after skinning. Terrible footage. Does the body look genderless? Does this mean that with this terrible execution, Anna lost her gender, became, as it were, “neutral”.

4. What is th best way to characterize Anna's experience after she became a "martyr"? Some reviews speak of euphoria, bliss and transcendence.
