The lady who played Mademoiselle was excellent

I'm talking Oscar worthy. She was a very cold and evil character, and you could tell just by looking at her. If you saw her in public you would immediately be suspicious of her and think something is off about her. Great performance. More villains need to act like this, because that's what they are like in real life. Not larger than life and charismatic and likeable in some way.

She was one of the best quebec (where the movie was filmed) actress of her generation but sadly, she passed away last year.

I was unaware that she has passed away, that is very sad to hear. I had never seen her before this movie but I agree, she was excellent.Looking at her imdb profile, her work went back to 1960 so she obviously had a full working career, I am very happy to have enjoyed her acting at least this once.

she's now in heaven for real.

hopefully God won't be too angry at her for participating in torture porn

She was so perfect for the role and gave me the creeps since her very first scene, coming from the darkness to talk to Anna in the basement. And that last scene... Wow...

Animal crackers in my soup
Monkeys and rabbits loop the loop

I too thought she was excellent in this movie, but not for the same reasons. As the story unfolded, and I learned her motivations I started to understand her in a sick kind of way.

She was trying to solve the most important question that any man has ever asked. She and her cadre of septuagenarians were also particularly motivated to know the answer. So much horror in our history has been done for so much less significant reasons. How far would you go for incontrovertible proof of the afterlife, and a glimpse into it before death? What if you were in your last 10-20 years of your life?

I love this kind of villain best, the one you can sympathize with their motives, and are almost relieved that they are willing to martyr their morals to achieve them so you and I don't have to.
