What's with the mattress?

The sponge baths make sense. Probably to prevent infections. The feedings make sense. To keep her alive. But why would they give her a comfort item like a mattress? That doesn't make sense to me. They are supposedly feeding her suffering systematically and coldly. Just seemed out of place to me.

It's nice to know that you are aware sleeping is a part of living too. If they just wanted her to die they wouldn't be bathing, feeding or letting her go to SLEEP.

You don't need a mattress to sleep. You won't die from sleeping on a concrete floor. I don't get your point. She doesn't need a mattress to sleep or to stay alive. A mattress is for comfort. Re-read my post. Re-watch the film. They are feeding her suffering systematically and coldly. The mattress is out of place.

I don't recall seeing her sleep on a mattress. I recall seeing a mattress that I assumed was out of her reach, part of the torture, maybe.

reply

The mattress was only shown once and imo they used it as another method of psychological torture, since she wasn't sleeping on it and like above user said, to put the comfort item in the same room but out of reach.
