I'm an adult and cried horribly during this movie. Does anyone think this is really a movie for children? Especially as young as 8 years old? I would imagine children would be terribly upset.

I actually wouldn't object to that description. If the dog's death was more of a focus in the movie then I would hesitate to recommend it to children. I think it's very sad for adults because we understand things like loyalty, grief, and friendship on a deeper level than children. I think an 8 year old would see this as just another animal movie.
