What year is it supposed to take place in? 1987, like the original? Because that computer is not adequate by 2008 standards.

That makes sense then. I always assumed the boy telling the story was set in present day (2009) and he wasn't even born at the start of the film meaning Richard Gere's character would have initially found Hatchi in the mid 90's, with Hachi passing in the mid to late 2000s. Interesting point to bring up actually, as Apple hit their decline around that time and didn't make their comeback for years later. Hey, that could just be product placement though.
