Hachi's Passing: One Possible Interpretation

One possible (and overly-detailed) interpretation of Hachi's last moments:

1:24:15: Hachi begins his "last trip to the station." This is the first time we see Hachi treking to the station at night. Every other day, he's showed up right before 5pm and left after 9pm. This time, it's as if he knows his end is near, and because of it he wants to make one "last trip," just in case.

1:25:43: after the last passenger leaves the station, we see Hachi close his eyes. His eyes are twitching, which perhaps suggests that this is the beginning of Hachi's dream.

First white light: signals the beginning of Hachi's dream, rather than his death.

1:26:00: Hachi dreams of Parker in black and white, and the film cuts back to Hachi. Arguably, he's dreaming here because his eyes are still twitching.

1:26:26: the beginning of the end -- the moment that Hachi's been waiting for, when Parker returns, one last time, to the train station.

Second white light (after Hachi's reunion with Parker): shows Hachi leaving this world. Ten years later, the two are finally together.

1:26:52: the final close up of Hachi -- he's completely motionless; no eye twitch, no breathing. He's at peace.

During the dreaming sequence, where Hachi is remembering his life with Parker, I found that to be the most heart wrenching portion of the movie. It was so damned sad, that this loyal companion had to die alone.

after the final close up, the camera turns to the sky over the town, where human and dog are again met, at last. This is the most devastating scene I think
