1. Pulp Fiction 10/10 2. Jackie Brown 10/10 3. Inglourious Basterds 9/10 4. The Hateful Eight 9/10 5. Django Unchained 9/10 6. Death Proof 9/10 7. Reservoir Dogs 8/10 8. Kill Bill 1&2 5/10
I was unsure whether to put The Hateful Eight above Django, but my gut tells me The Hateful Eight is just slightly better. Both are still amazing in my opinion. Still don't know if I can call The Hateful Eight a bona fide masterpiece - the only Tarantino films I can call definitive masterpieces are the first 3 on the list.
It's a good one, but it's by far my least favorite QT film. I go: 1) Pulp Fiction 10/10 2) Jackie Brown 9.5/10 3) Reservoir Dogs 9.5/10 4) Kill Bill 9.5/10 5) Kill Bill 2 9/10 6) Django 9/10 7) Inglorious Bastards 8.5/10 8) Death Proof 7.5/10
I am a huge fan of all of his films. It's hard to even consider ranking them, but I did the best I could. My problem with Death Proof was that the dialogue was rough. I don't think it was QT's fault, but the actresses themselves weren't the best. The character of Stuntman Mike was a classic, but I didn't mind any of the girl dying... They were just hot. It's a tough one, honestly. I just think that because this film was made as a grind house film, which aren't supposed to be acclaimed films, per say, I can't rate it highly. I do seriously respect what he did with this film, however.
I get what you mean about Death Proof, and I understand it being someone's least favorite. It just works for me. On the flip side, Kill Bill is a movie that just doesn't click with me - I've watched it many times and simply don't like it. Yet every other QT fan loves it - it's strange just not getting something like that.
To each his own, really. I like kung-fu flicks so Tarantino making a homage to that is right up my alley. The 88s scene is iconic to me. But yeah, it's really just preference.
Pulp Fiction Kill Bill v.1/Hateful 8 (tie) Death Proof/Ingl.Basterds (tie) Reservoir Dogs Kill Billv.2
Django Unchained and Jackie Brown are the only ones that don't POP the way the rest do for me. Django is very entertaining but it is sloppy and lacks any irony or intellectual heft. Basically, it seems like a shameless crowd pleaser and I have come to expect more from Tarantino after Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds. JB is technically exceptional, but always seemed to me like it was aimed at the critics. It is too self-consciously "mature" and the romance (or supposedly bittersweet lack thereof) between Grier and Forster doesn't work at all.
