Which 'universe' is Death Proof set in?

Movie Movie, read the trivia the sheriff from Kill Bill and Dusk Till Dawn is in the scene at the hospital, connecting all 3 movies.

Hmm...I think the first half occurs in the 'larger than life' universe of Kill Bill and Death Proof...Earl McGraw is a common thread among the 3, and the 2nd half is "Thunder Bolt", a "movie within a movie" that Stuntman Mike stars in. In "fiction" he stars in this action-chick revenge flicks, while in real lie he is a psycho killer.

I'd say the film is actually both universes. The first half is the 'movie movie' universe and the second half, with its clearer image and film references (Abernathy's ringtone is 'Twisted Nerve' from Kill Bill Vol. 1) is the 'realer than real', not to mention the girls actually work on a film set.
