I Liked It! It caught me by surprise.
Somewhat pedestrian cinematography and directing style that shows it's small-budget production, and not exactly new ground story-wise, but I enjoyed this more than I expected, and there's some little touches in certain scenes that worked for me (e.g. the little sick girl in the hospital, the boy thinking she's a fairy, the ending scene, etc.), some of which works due to Van Dien's performance.
Speaking of which, Van Dien does a solid job as the protagonist and sells it well enough despite her waifish physical frame (eat some meat or donuts, girl!). In fact, I'd go as far as to say that she's surpassed her father acting-wise (who I like but other than Rico in Starship Troopers, I've always found his acting a bit bland). On the other hand, Robert Mitchem was her grandfather, so she's got a solid genetic pedigree. While she has plenty of room to grow, I'd wager she has a promising future in the business if she pursues challenging roles.
Admittedly, I'm a bit of a sucker for these type of non-superhero superhero movies (e.g. Chronicle, Upgrade, etc.), and there's plenty of Dark Angel vibes here (again, the story is an old retread). But I enjoyed this and could see this spinning off into a series.
Hint, hint, Kelsey.
