enjoyed as a movie, as an adaptation, ...eh

Okay so minor spoilers below

King is one of my favorite authors, and this is one of my favorite books of his. I'd say I've read it about 5 times or so

But I'm not such a purist. I know there will always be things lost in translation to adaptions, and try to enjoy the movie for what it is. Lost in translation is unavoidable. That was the case with the other two, and they were for TV and had much longer run times. So as a result, this is definitely what we call a *loose* adaptation. The major beats and a few favorite key scenes are there, but many alterations were made and every shortcut was taken. That said, as a movie, it was fun. B-level fare for sure, but that's fine, that's all 'Salem's Lot has ever set out to be. It's Peyton Place with vampires. It was entertaining, and the changes made definitely kept me on my toes, which was of course the intent. It's an atmospheric movie, pretty to look at, clearly destined for an October release.

Have you watched the 1979’s version? I’m glad that you called it exactly what it appears to be to me, “Peyton Place with Vampires”.

reply

Haha yes.

In all honesty I've seen it described that way elsewhere, and it stuck with me

Do you think the 1979 version is a better choice?

reply

Idk, I guess it depends on what vibe you're feeling that night. The 1979 version has its classic charms. Haven't seen it in a long time though.

If you’re feeling up to it, you should. I’m contemplating watching it again which could almost make me not watch the new one. In any case, “Salem’s Lot 2024” is being placed on the back burner.
