Over obsessed ? Homoeroticism ?

Dis anyone else find it kind of weird that the villain was obsessing on the hero ? Unlike Rocky, there was no Championship at stake, so what did he want so bad ? a kiss ?

I thought the same thing, Ryan was completely obsessed with Jake from the beginning.

To answer your question seriously:
Ryan has extraordinary mma skills. He beats up all of his opponents easily, and gets bored. He sees Jake as a more challenging opponent, and even a threat to his hegemony (domination). That is why he just wants to fight Jake. Ryan's life is just about fighting, winning, being the best, and humiliating his opponents.

To answer your question jokingly:
Ryan does have a homoerotic obsession for Jake. That is why in the last fight, he enjoys so much grabbing Jake's crotch and lifts him up. Ryan ejaculates right after that moment. That is why he loses the fight.

A lot of guys ejaculate while watching Cam Gigandet in this movie.

reply

Why did he even see Jake as a challenge at the beginning, though? Because he beat up some football players? He had no MMA skills whatsoever.

reply

He didn't consider him an equal, but Jake was making news for beating the footballers. So he had to squash him right away.

Great feedback guys and I enjoyed the serious soliquee followed by a silly second thought. Think of how great college would be if Professors gave serious followed by silly. I wonder if Directors mistakingly forget what Hitchcock would call the (something I forget but is basically the catalyst for moving the story forward....McGruffin maybe ?) ... or if they purposely allow the film to take such a turn for a wink wink, unreal obsessed direction.

reply

Seriously though,if you go to one of the parents of these type of films, Rocky, Mr. T s Clubber only had eyes for Adrian, Tommy Gunn was autistic-like aloof and Drago.....well bad example because Drago did stare Rock down like come to me now. Well the point is, not since Drago has a characterwho supposedly doesnt like the other has a tough guy stared down another with such vigor as Ryan does. He even adds smiles as if flirting, looking at him when finsihing off an opponent as well as when in the crowd watching him barely escape defeat. Fact is, the Ryan fighter was at such a height that his fascination sith a guy who did not appear as skilled seemed peculiar.

Hey BoSoxRule,

1) Jake beats up the footballers and knocks out his adversary in one punch, in the football field video.

2) In the school basement, Jake is willing to take on 4 mean guys and rushes in to come to the rescue of Max, whom he didn't even know. Jake dodges a punch and connects one of his own.

Those 2 scenes show Ryan that Jake has heart, bravery, agility, flexibility, punching power. Although Ryan doesn't know about what MMA level Jake is at.

Ryan also sees Jake to be of same height, same weight, same frame, same age (which Cam Gigandet and Sean Faris do have in real life). So Ryan sees Jake as a worthy opponent at the beginning.

Once you have the heart, the fire, the speed, the fluidity ... the striking, kicking, blocking, grappling, submission skills come as a matter of training.

In the course of Ryan and Jake encounters, Ryan discovers that Jake's MMA skill are non-existent, but Jake very quickly acquires those skills.

After Ryan sees Jake beat up the three guys riding the yellow Hummer, he feels very nervous and threatened, so he needs to take out Jake as soon as possible and at by all means.

reply

Did you find it a little odd, though, how Jake beats up those Hummer guys but then is taken down so easily by Ryan in the bathroom scene?

reply

The Yellow Hummer guys are just regular guys, not trained in MMA. You could be all muscular and weight 250 pounds, but you could be beaten in a fraction of a second by a 150 pounds guy who is MMA trained and knows how when and where to strike.

When Jake beats up those 3 guys, he was only at half way of his training. He still could not control his anger nor control the outcome of the fight. Jake was just into a few weeks of MMA training, while Ryan was trained, ingrained, and conditioned to fight, win, and be the best since childhood.

After being humiliated again by Ryan, Jake keeps on training very hard. Jean Roqua personally mentors him from standup skills and ground skills, and mental control, until Jake is ready.

Wow, you really liked this movie, huh?

I agree. Ryan did kind of pounce on Tyler a bit to much ever since he first saw him. And to the people saying that he saw Tyler as competition, I disagree, yes they saw the video of him beating those players up... but that was completely different fighting used than what Ryan is used to... why did Ryan feel strongly about Tyler getting into this whole club.

Its like to say everyone that has had fights belongs in one of those bare knuckle fighting clubs which is untrue.

Ever since Ryan saw Tyler, it was instinct just to ahve him as his next target as he got bored with beating up everyone else... dont think he thoughtb he wa scompetition though.

If it's a pro fighter like Roger Huerta beating up some 250 guy then yes.

But you seriously lack any common sense. Tyler just started training MMA.

F'k that. A punk assed 17 year old 169 pound kid who just started taking MMA will not beat up three bigger dudes who looks like thike they have been in street fights themselves.

reply

Yeah, Ryan clearly was turned on by Jake. When he lifted him up by the crotch, he should've squeezed a little, Jake would pass out, and Ryan would've owned him.

reply

Homoeroticism? More like Sadism. Ryan was one sick puppy, not a gay one. He was not just obsessed with violence, but obsessed with doing it infront of a crowd.

He was obsessed with him because Jake showed no fear and was getting attention for something he (Ryan) was known for: violence. He wanted to stake his claim and get his attention back.

reply

Its really quite simple. Just like a Lion would in the wild. If he sees someone come into his territory he has to show that he is the king of the jungle. So when Jake comes to Ryans town Ryan sees it as his job to make sure that everyone knows he is the king of the jungle by taking out anyone in his path and everyone else in the area already knows it. So to sum it up Ryan is the King of the Jungle and is trying to make sure that Jake knows he is less tha him.

reply

Your answer roots in the brains of most primates.
Lol.

Ryan was an Alpha-male, and he saw Jake as his competition. His female seemed interested in the new add-on to the flock, and it seemed that the new male were physically almost equal to the alpha. The alpha of course underestimated the new male, but nonetheless saw him as a slight threat, and therefor felt repelled to rid of this new intruder immediately.
Jake was an alpha, and Ran recognized this.
Of course, in the end the two Alphas battle, and when Jake won, he took over as the new Alpha of the flock.

I'm a big fan of the human/animal stuff, but nobody here mentioned the psychology behind having the freak nazi of a father that Ryan had. That makes it all but impossible to have any real affection for another male, sexual or otherwise, since he never learned how. This movie made a big point about that in at least two separate moments. Ryan is the type of guy who gets more out of fighting with another guy than he does out of sex with a girl. I boxed for a few years and I know/knew at least a couple of guys like this. But me? No, I would most definitely rather have the sex than brawl. Some males who don't have the tools to express affection end up doing so through substituting aggression and outright violence. That's one of those backwards ways we can differ in motivation from the primates even though our actions are the same. Fight Club made this a little more obvious, but that was a better movie.

Yep, You obviously suffer from homosexual tendencies yourself to be thinking of this.

First off Ryan challenge Tyler in the beginning to a fight because he wanted some more comp and Tyler was the big buzz due to his Youtube fight in the football game.

Tyler gets his asss kicked and Ryan moves on, thus it is Tyler now the one obsessing over Ryan FOR REVENGE.

But you are so caught up with your homosexual fantasies that you forgot one important plot which contradicts this stupid thread, that Ryan's girlfriend Baja leaves him for Tyler. And noticed how Tyler was so caught up in getting revenge against Ryan that after he got his girl he had calm down until Ryan took his boy to the hospital.

But for real man, if my girl left me for a guy whose asss I just kick, I would be obsessed with f'king him up too.

Are you kidding me?

Go get laid......WITH A CHICK.

reply

"First off Ryan challenge Tyler in the beginning to a fight because he wanted some more comp"

And that's his biggest kick in life.

"Ryan's girlfriend Baja leaves him for Tyler."

He didn't give a crap about her, that was just an excuse. The movie made that pretty clear, and at the end he moves on to some other chick.

Yeah that is why Ryan gets mad when Baja leaves him and he grabs her arm.

You ever heard of pride?

She leaves him for the other dude whom he *beep* up, he will get pissed as any prideful dude would.

reply

She's just a posession, like his car. This dumbed down movie could not have made this any clearer. Actually if he lost his car, he probably would have been more pi$$ed off than he was over losing his chick. Face it, a guy like that is more into getting down and rolling around with other guys than he ever could be loving a girl.
