Does Tom deserve Autumn yet?

The more time you watch the film, it is easier to understand that Summer was not the only one at fault in the relationship.

Autumn is supposed to be his One True Love. However, it isn't supposed to be that she is right for him, he has to be right for her as well.

Or has Tom come far enough in his own progression that his "fate" encounter with Autumn was supposed to happen.

Deserve is not the word. I'm not quite sure what is, but it's not deserve.

Anyway, more to the point, I never believed Autumn was his one true love, if there is such a thing. She was presented as a nice girl who has something in common with him... that's all. Her name is symbolic, cutely so, and the viewer is inclined to wish them well by the time the final counter card shows up. That doesn't mean their relationship was meant to be portrayed as happily ever after. It just means Tom did indeed move on, as life does, summer into autumn, starting the next chapter of his life. By the end of the movie, his personal resolution (quitting New Hampshire Greetings, pursuing his true passion of architecture, etc.) has a far greater resonance than any romantic notion of Autumn being The One. If anything, she's simply The Next One.

I don't think Autumn is supposed to be The One. That would go against the whole idea of the movie that "The One" doesn't exist, and thinking that a girl is The One leads to total heartbreak when you find out she isn't. I think Autumn is supposed to represent Tom finally moving on from Summer, heading to the next stage in his romantic life. By the way, I still can't hear her name without rolling my eyes.
