what an awful thing to say... about anyone... what she ever do to you... she's imaginary after all.

anyway, its not like the character force Tom to fall head over heels in love; she warned him not to, but he persisted so the pain was his own fault.

But pain in love is inevitable and one should never try to avoid it because if you do you'll never find love.

...Exactly. So why feel awful about somebody hoping for cancer for soem imaginary character? Beats me.

The only thing she did wrong was send him incredibly mixed signals.

You don't say "I just want to be friends" and then start holding hands and have sex repeatedly with someone over several months, then break it off as if nothing happened.
