How does Tom misinterpret the graduate?

There is no such thing as destiny and a happy ending, which is what The Graduate wants to show when the main characters start having second thoughts. Tom only never picked up on them having second thoughts, because it's only non-verbally implied at the end of the movie. He thought it was about destiny and a happy ending.
