Avu DuVernay’s film is surprisingly tough, with some striking cinematography via Bradford Young. David Oyelowo’s nuanced portrayal of MLK really deserved that Best Actor Oscar that ended up going to Eddie Redmayne.

2014 was such a great year, there were a lot of good performances that didn't get nominated. My top pick was Ralph Fiennes in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

shareSelma's a good movie, and Oyelowo's performance was great, but I still think Michael Keaton should have taken it that year for Birdman (and my Best Picture vote would have been torn between Birdman and Whiplash).
