Why would anyone wanna live in Alabama

The movie was pretty decent...solid 7/10 type film. I think if this movie was in the hands of a different director, it could've been better

But besides that...

I always find it ironic that the historically racist states are also now some of the poorest. Probably should have spent less time worrying about the "black problem " and focus more on infrastructure and ways to not make your state a hole

reply

Great point. There might be a correlation between the need to keep other people down and remaining poor.

Possibly the most ignorant post ever

What makes it the most ignorant post ever? It could be your post is not the most ignorant post if we're using tenuous bias for support?

Coming from the person who gives a whole new meaning to the phrase pig ignorant.

At least you admit what trash you are. You do give a whole new meaning to ignorance and stupidity.

reply

Your the idiotic one, plain and simple.

reply

Often enough, it's the people who really aren't so well off themselves who openly put other people down, because all too often, people who have little or nothing feel the need for a scapegoat.

There is actually some truth to the fact that the racist nature of B'ham is largely why the city is so poor today.

B'ham was going to have the Major Airport of the southeast. After the 16 Street Baptist church bombing they decided to move the plans to Atlanta instead.

Atlanta is now the largest city in the Southeast and B'ham is a shell of its former self only 200k people living there today.

The State of Alabama is doing just fine though. I live in Huntsville and there are two major plants opening here in the next 2 years bringing over 3000 new jobs (polaris and remington). We have NASA and Redstone Arsenal army Base. The city has one of fastest growing zip codes in America and will be larger than B'ham in less than 5 years.

Huntsville also has the Highest IQ per capita of any city in America. It's a fact look it up.

Please don't besmirch an entire state because of some ignorant racist people from 50 years ago.

reply

lol i doubt it's the highest iq per capita. It's probably Boston or San Francisco.

reply

JFC, don't try to pretend that Huntsville is anything like the rest of Alabama.

There's always been a correlation between racism and other ignorant attitudes, and factors like education, religious fundamentalism, economics, isolation, etc etc etc.... It's hard to pluck out just one as a sole contributor but they do all go together into the mix. Bottom line, the less educated and literate a population, the more ignorant it tends to be. Likewise, poorer areas tend to be less educated and literate (which also contributes to remaining poor).

Exactly. Just look at the inner-city ghettos today. They're the least-educated and most racist groups of people in the country.

You know you pulled that one out of your stinky a$$.

Sure inner city ghetto people invented race and racism so they could sell white people into slavery. You idiots are too ridiculous for mere words. Clowns.

You're missing one of the key principles of successful trolling...

Namely, don't tip your hand as a troll quite so quickly. You also ought to provide at least a grain of sense in your insults, otherwise people don't even feel like bothering with you.

You're a huge idiot.

The racist here is you and your projection of racism.

And you're a coward.

That there is a correlation between racism and the relatively low income of the affected states does not mean racism was the cause. In fact, it is likely that the cause-and-effect largely runs the other way. We know that even within the same state, average income is higher in urban than in rural areas, level of education is higher and the extent of poverty (at least in a developed country like the US) generally less. Similarly, at the time of the Civil War and after, the industrial North has higher income compared to the predominantly agricultural South. For historical reasons, slaves were brought into the Americas to work in the plantations and thus are concentrated in those particular states.

Racial discrimination is likely to show itself when the region is poor. When the whole economy is booming and labor is short, everyone could get hired. In poor regions or declining industries where jobs are scarce, race and other criteria might be used by some employers as a means to ration the few available jobs.

As for "why would anyone wanna live in Alabama", do they really have any choice? If you are poor and have little skills, you are not able to relocate. Migrants usually have been found to be more resourceful and are more educated compared to the average.

reply

I, for one, never said racism was THE cause, or even A cause, of poverty. However, I feel ignorance, which is part of from where racism springs, does help perpetuate poverty, although it was likely poverty which was a large factor in the culture of ignorance. As another user pointed out, you see the same thing in urban ghettos as you often do in the rural south.

And I agree about Alabama; most who are there don't have a choice. With the exception of luring in tech giants to Huntsville, most of the state is not desirable for anyone who has a choice in where to live. I know I, for one, never considered Alabama as a possibility of states to live. It would have taken a huge and unique opportunity to get me to go there.

I just read an interview with a gay rights advocate from Alabama. She was talking about Ray Moore and his kind, and she essentially said that the motto of Alabama is the 'Make Me' state. These people like to be suborn and contrarian because it's the only type of power that they have. Pathetic.

Better than the entire continent!? No way. There are hundreds of miles of beautiful landscapes, coherent governments, and giraffes! Africa > Alabama EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK!

Racism is a form of inefficiency, it stops the most talented people doing the best jobs, and makes a smaller pool of people to select from for the most important positions. Over time racist areas are bound to fall behind more forward thinking areas.

In sports you just can't be likely to win with all white racist teams, if someone tried that then they'd almost certainly fall behind other teams.
