The Oscars
This would have won best picture if Steven Spielberg or David O Russell or the like had directed the same exact film

shareWhy are people so hung up on the Oscars as if it is some badge of quality? The Academy often gets it wrong. Off the top of my head here are a few instances:
Spike Lee's Do the right thing is a great film( his best) should have won the Oscar for Best Film. What did it lose to? Driving Miss *beep* Daisy! A film that hardly gets shown on TV. Its fallen down the back of the sofa.
Dances with Wolves won best film in 1990.Good film yes, but in no way in the same class as Goodfellas, which it beat. Martin Scorsese's masterpiece.
Fast forward to 1998. Shakespeare in Love wins Best Film. Can you honestly say that this flimsy rom-com set in Elizabethan England was a better film than Saving Private Ryan??
The question is: Will Selma stand the test of time? In 2025, will we remember it the way we do Gone with the wind or Casablanca?
I think the director herself said as much.🐭
shareSpielberg and David O did not win for directing much better films than this. So, I sincerely doubt they would've won for making the "same exact film".
