Why did Strobl monitor a casualty Web site?

It appears he was looking for a KIA connected to where he was from, and yes, I understand he volunteered for the escort duty. But I did not note seeing any obvious prior deliberation on wanting or needing to do this.

What did I miss regarding Strobl's decision on being an escort?

He was looking to see if any of his friends were on it. Then he saw that Chance was on the list and was listed as being from his hometown. It turned out that Chance joined the Marines in that town but was from Dubois and thats where his parents wanted him buried.

Checking up to see if someone he knew locally was KIA makes sense, and I do remember he felt the pull to be with his fellow soldiers and the duty for being alive and at home for his wife and kids.
