Why wouldn't they serve Cherie?

When Cherie is thrown out of the shop for trying to buy the vodka, do they refuse the sale because:

1) She is visibly intoxicated already
2) They know she is underaged because of her fame

or some other reason? I'm not familiar with the drinking laws of the '70s. Could anyone clear this up for me?

reply

From her book, the reason was that she was very, very visibly intoxicated.

I was more confused about those 2 huge onions she was buying along with the vodka. What was that all about? Was she just randomly buying onions because she was so drunk and out of it, or did I miss something?

reply

Yeah, I think that was a funny way of showing how completely out of it she was. In reality it was vodka and soda.

reply

Perhaps it was just a matter of artistic license. I noticed the way she put down the bottle right between the onions was rather suggestive. -_^

The goofs section hasn't bothered listing it, but one of the film's few continuity glitches are those onions - they disappear from the cart - for one shot, it's vodka only.
As for WHY she'd add them - it makes sense to me, as someone who was a young person buying booze, underage, in late 70's...when ID'ing was more of a casual matter; a clerk usually wouldn't ask unless they became suspicious (unlike more rigid rules today, especially in supermarkets.) A "kid" buying only liquor would more be proofed more often than that same "young adult" buying some household items. I often added some unnecessary stuff to the pre-party shopping: a jug of bleach, a broom, or a houseplant. It usually worked.

Don't you use onions in a martini sometimes instead of olives? I think you can.

I assumed it was because they knew she was underage.
