Interview with Lita Ford on film, rivalry with Joan and comeback:

http://rockwired.com/litaford.html

This article is from 2009. Wow. I can understand some of Lita's resentments but she comes off as extremely jealous, petty, attention-starved and homophobic in that.

She says that Kenny (Joan's manager) has tried to destroy her career since the mid-80s. That might be true and I understand her bitterness about that. However, I don't believe her schtick about being really close to Joan before that. In the '80s there are a number of articles of her dissing the Runaways as a a band (that has since changed) and calling Joan Jett a carpet muncher.

In this whatever anger she has against Kenny she doesn't need to say Joan and Cherie are playing victims when that's the tone of this interview. Joan and Kenny also obviously didn't destroy her career. She had a lot of success in the mid-80s to early '90s. Grunge came out and killed hair metal, not Kenny.

What really soured me though was her saying that all of Joan Jett's fans were "homosexuals who like glitter rock" and her fans were "straight heavy metal rockers." Sure, some of Joan's fans are gay BUT THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I'm sure Lita has a gay fan base given her music is mostly hair metal. I haven't heard her new album, but it's not like she was playing with Led Zeppelin.

She also said she assumed the (still-unreleased) film was going to be "homosexual." I'm kind of shocked.

From that Lita Ford interview:

JOAN’s audience is homosexual and my audience is straight, rockin’ – well some of them might be a little homosexual – but hey. She plays glitter rock and I play heavy metal.

Lol, this from a woman who was big in the days of hair metal? Lita, I think your audience is far gayer than Joan's.

About 20 years ago I saw this 'documentary' (basically a hodgepodge - a MESS - of unrelated clips) called "Sugar and Spice" filmed in a drag club/queen bar in Hollywood. One of the performers was proudly showing off "her" leather jacket autographed by Lita Ford (everyone in the club knew who she was) as well as Samantha Strong and Heather Hunter (I had to look up those last two people).

Yep, I would say that - at least back-in-the-day - her audience was far gayer than Joan's.

ROTFL!!! Amen, necron667! Pretty funny how all those metal posers tried to LOOK GLAM but all of us 70's kids new they were fakes, and their music blew! And Lita was a bitch. Didn't need a movie to tell us that.

She also refers to Joan as "frontman" at one point in time, either in Edgeplay or in an interview, I forget which one, but yeah it seems that way doesn't it?

So..how 'bout it then?

reply

After watching Edgeplay, and reading Jackie Fox's blogposts, NOTHING about Lita Ford surprises me. This woman is just plain vicious. She and Jackie Fox were friends. According to JF, Lita once hit her with a telephone and tried to strangle her with the receiver cord. Why? Because while they were sharing a hotel room.JF woke LF up by making a telephone call at noon. They'd had a late night. Even if she had a wicked hangover, that's extreme behavior.

Those homophobic remarks are cruel. Sandy West was a lesbian-does anyone wonder how she and Lita got along?

reply

How exactly is that homophobic? because you don't like the fact that she's right? Ugh, I'm beyond sick of homophobic-phobes who push their beliefs on everyone and pretend anyone who isn't a doormat to the gay community or anything like that is homophobic. Grow up please.

Anyway, Joan is conceited and quite full of herself. I dont know Lita all that well, but she can't be nearly as bad as Miss 70s Rock Version of Britney.

How exactly is what Lita said true? She said that Joan's audience is "homosexual" where as her audience is straight rocking? How is that true? Not only that but how can she tell? Joan plays Rock N' Roll...I don't see how that translates into her audience being "homosexual". Not only that but why the hell would it matter anyway?

Or she could be. Any interview I've seen or read of Lita she's very conceited. Not only that but she has this element of jealousy that just makes her seem petty sometimes (like this interview).

I'm not a fan of Lita Ford and I agree that she's being a petty jealous A-hole about the whole thing.

But she didn't say anything homophobic. She was pointing out how stupid it is for Jett's dickhead manager to act as if Ford is a threat to Jett's career since for the most part they don't have the same audience. I suppose she said it in a dopey way, but rock stars say dopey things all the time.
