Dakota Fanning?

I thought that Dakota Fanning did a good job in this movie. It is almost a coming of age movie where she transitions from kid roles to adult ones :) It was a success for me :D

I thought it was a compelling performance as a performance and liked her in the movie.

But having said that, her version of Cherie Currie didn't have the toughness that the real singer projected, not even close. If you compare Fanning's stage presence performing "Cherry Bomb" for a Japanese TV show to video of the real event, there is a marked difference. I liked Fanning's approach to the song, by the way, but there was definitely more vulnerability and less of the real woman's toughness and aloofness.

yeah, Cherie has a ferocity in her stage presence that would be difficult to duplicate... Dakota did a good job with it. She just made it her own.

adam_padmon - you have to read the book, Fanning was accurate in the portrayal of Currie, very accurate. Currie's tough image was a complete act. You have to remember she was only a 15 year old girl. This movie wasn't about the in your face image that the band had to the fans and media. It was about the behind the scenes of a bunch of nervous teen girls doing something extraordinary despite their age, talent and the bias against female rockers.

Also if you watch Currie in that teen movie with Jodie Foster (forget the name) but Fanning's resemblance to Currie is amazing. Not only her appearance but the expressions, the smirks and so on. You can tell Fanning study Currie thoroughly for this movie.

The kid just got talent, It's rare when you see an actor bring a character to life like Fanning does. it's usually the other way around a character becomes the actor. Like Kristen Stewart playing Joan Jett. She did a good job but she never had the ability to bring the teenager Joan Jett to life, It was always Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett throughout the whole movie.

That's not the case with Fanning, in fact there is no Dakota Fanning in this movie there's only Cherie Currie.

reply

Perhaps, but the Currie I see in archival footage from the time (both interviews and performances) is very different in mannerisms than Fanning's version.

maybe stewart should have played currie. i like fanning, but she was wrong for the part.

I think Dakota Fanning is one of those actresses that can probably do anything she wants and be effective at it.

I don't know if its method acting or just sheer persistence but there are some actors who can step outside and away from who they are in reality and totally absorb another character so much that its difficult to separate the two.

I look forward to what she does in the future.

I think Dakota did a wonderful job in the role. Her voice is nowhere near as ferocious and thick as the real Cherie Currie was, but some of that was probably acting choice to show vulnerability that underlied Cherie's character. There was no attempt to make her look older and as a matter of fact I think that creepiness of a child playing a vamp is part of what makes her performance stand out.

Now the real Cherie Currie did not look 15 when she was in The Runaways, but again I think that was an acting/directing decision to play up just how vulnerable and capable of being taken advantage of that Cherie was (and all the girls to an extent. I love the scene with them all playing in the motel pool. At that point it's just a bunch of teenage girls having a blast, and there's a certain innocence there we see fall away as the movie progresses.

Gamera is really neat... He is made of mystery meat!

Dakota Fanning doesn't have sex appeal; she isn't sexy and she doesn't have charisma. It's the classic little girl do a sexy and edgy role so you can come of age.

I remember the Runaways; I remember little foxes and Cherie Currie. Dakota Fanning just wasn't believable at all.

Now Kristen Stewart who kind of seems like a tomboy did an Amazing job as Joan Jett. She hit it right on.
