BE HONEST, HOW FAR WOULD THEY GET IF THEY WERE BOYS???

Local talent shows or open mike nights?

They looked like street prostitutes, could not sing and appealed to girls who later came out of the closet.

The same is true with Motley Crue and the New York Dolls (I actually bought one of the Doll's albums with my saved up U.S. Green Stamps at a Green Stamp store...Anyone remember those back in the '70s and '80s? LOL!).

I actually like Motley Crue, though, but in reality neither of those bands were great bands, IMO.

Are you implying that musically, they weren't that good? Because I disagree. However, you do have a good point - if they were boys, then they'd just be another band. And there were plenty of bands - good, bad, and mediocre - who were just guys. The fact that The Runaways were girls gave them that edge, it made them unique, it made them interesting, and it made people pay attention to them (whether they liked them for it, or hated them for it). Without that gimmick, they may not have gone as far as they did. But they wouldn't have gotten that far either if they didn't have some good music to back it up.

I dunno... with the twin guitar attack of Joan Jett and Lita Ford, and the sex-kitten in-your-face vocals of Cherie Currie they were definitely a force to be reckoned with. But the fact they were girls surely helped, although honestly the fact that they were in LA probably helped them just as much.

I think if they started Without the whining machine Cherie Currie they would have lasted a bit longer but then we have to know that they started really young and they were looking for a chance and they didn't know their styles yet. they broke up because Lita Ford was more into metal and hard rock while Joan Jett was more into punk and thats all (( cherie hated neither especially punk and was into what she called melodic rock which is similar to david bowie style though that wasn't the reason why she quit the band))

This is why Joan Jett, at least, is overrated. If she were a man no one would be gushing about what a talented "rocker" she was/is. She was the most famous girl in rock at the time so people glorify her as the rock queen she isn't.

I'm surprised the Runaways together made is as far as they did though. Their music wasn't bad but as guys you know they'd do better. But then, Cherie dressed like a hooker onstage, so it's not like guys wouldn't come to their shows.

If they were boys, they would have been the Sex Pistols.

They were as good if not better (and more consistent) then much of the powerpop/punk bands out there, and predated many of them. The Van Halen are God retards out there wouldn't know real rock if it hit them in the face.

I'm sorry, but have you ever heard the Sex Pistols play? Because I haven't. I have heard and seen them abuse their instruments and voices, but to call that 'playing'... and yet they were brilliant. And a lot, A LOT worse than these girls.

reply

The all girl band thing certainly gave them an edge. However some people (like myself) don't need to listen to bands that have the best musicians. I love Joan Jett and the Runaways because they played aggressive Rock N' Roll. It's one of the reasons why I love Motley Crue. They just go out and play aggressive, fun music.

Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band but even then I love less complex music.

The Sex Pistols were a completely original act that shocked the World and changed music. The Runaways were a 3-chord punk wannbe gimmick act. The OP has it right.
