Joan Jett did NOT write I Love Rock 'n Roll!

Although her version is the most popular, the song was originally recorded by The Arrows in 1975!

reply

I did not like the movie at all.

reply

No....really?!?!
my life's changed forever.

All in all you were all just bricks in the wall

reply

Everybody knows that. It was just her biggest hit. By the way, I found the original version of the song:

Joan's version doesn't sound any different.

reply

It does sound the same, alter the vocals a little bit and you've got Joan's version, cool

We're a walking gang of lust!

reply

The only difference between the two versions is that the original version features a male singer.

reply

And the fact she made it popular and made a ton of money from it.

reply

Sure, her version was a hit and the original wasn't. But I was specifically talking about the song itself.

I know..she covers so much that she is almost a cover band with her hits thrown in It did kinda disappoint me as well tbh

I think they showed a scene of Joan listening to The Arrows version at the beginning of the movie.

Well, Joan proved him wrong.

reply

I thought it was the band...ahem...Cherie.....not Fowley that said they didn't want to do it.

Excuse me, but what ORIGINAL hit did Joan Jett ever have, and how many did it sell?

reply

Joan Jett did co-write a few of her Top 40 hits like...

"Fake Friends" 1983
"I Hate Myself For Loving You" 1988
"Little Liar" 1988

and also "Bad Reputation" 1980, which was never released as a single in the USA has become another one of her signature songs. It has been covered many times and is used quite frequently in music games, movie soundtracks and the theme song of the TV show Freaks and Geeks.

Sorry, I don't have sales figures.

reply

"but what ORIGINAL hit did Joan Jett ever have, and how many did it sell? "

bad reputation. its a great song too. much better than ILRAR.

real easy to play too. EAB barred on the 5th fret. then shift it to the 6th fret for one verse.

The Runaways movie is a joke! they were totally trying to pull one over on the younger viewers by eluding that Joan was this AMAZING song writer that went on to be a legend. EVERY SONG SHE RECORDED SUCCESSFULLY WAS A COVER. That is why she was turned down by 28 major record companies. The movie makes it seem like these record companies were turning down these amazing songs that she wrote. I could go on and on how stooooopid this movie was. Dakota had ZERO sex appeal and looked like a 10 year old in a halloween costume. Have any of you seen Cherie's performance in FOXES? She actually steels every scene from Jodi Foster. Cherie was 100 times better as an actress then this Dakota Fanning. She can't even sing and she destroyed the experience of myself ever listening to Cherry Bomb again. And excuse me, but Lita Ford went on to by HUGE!! They didn't even acknowledge her at the end!! That was just WRONG! Good job movie producers!

This movie could have been great.

reply

@helgahelment: I don't know what movie you saw but it wasn't the runaways with KS and DF.

"eluding that Joan was this AMAZING song writer" Quite the contrary. the eluded to the fact than Ken wrote cherry bomb. And that JJ couldn't even play chords (ref the scene where she was taking basic lessons, banging on the guitar in the garage, etc...)

"EVERY SONG SHE RECORDED SUCCESSFULLY WAS A COVER." - Bad reputation. first album. fail.

"movie makes it seem like these record companies were turning down these amazing songs that she wrote. " - there was one record company shown in the movie. and the scene was the runaways signing with them.

"Dakota had ZERO sex appeal and looked like a 10 year old in a halloween costume" Neither did cherie when she was 15 in the runaways. She played it exactly how CC was in 1975, A naive suburban raised teenager. If actually compared CC with the runaways with CC 6 years later when she made FOXES you would see the exact same difference.

"She can't even sing" Neither could CC, she had the look that's all.

you are right about one thing, Lita Ford should of had more screen time.

Dakota Fanning's performance was about as convincing as an Olson twin. I kept waiting for her to be holding a Star-bucks cup in hand in each scene.

I'll say it again, this film tricked the younger viewers into believing Joan wrote it. please don't tell me this is common knowledge to teenagers today.

Also, the scenes that took place at the Engish Disco looked like any dive bar silver-lake today. Terrible set design.

At least Cherie Curie could fill out her lingerie. Dakota looked foolish to the point of embarrassment. And her whiney voice and singing was like nails driving into my skin. One if the most miscast roles ever.

The movie was one step above Josie and the Pussycat. I was waiting for Tara Ried to bust in scene.

Kristin Stuart was the only part of the movie i actually enjoyed. She can play a rocker. Dakota needs to go back to Sesame Street.

Done.

Helga...I agree with everything you posted....Dakota, who I normally like was terrible....and Lita got cheated

Now you did it--insulting JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS????

Are you both blind and deaf?

It was a GREAT film, if for Parker Poesy for no other reason.

Have you EVER seen a better costume than the one she wears with the sparklers sticking out? The carry down the stairs? The "bedroom" scene with the snacks?

The songs were pure pre-teen pop in its best form, a la Brittany, and the scenes of breaking the 4th wall were classic. Oh, And Tara Reid can visit me any time, by the way.

As for the Runaways, it was a fun film about MUSIC and to be railing on it because you didn't think it was factual enough? Or that someone was not "perfect" for the role?

It's a FILM with a low budget and some good songs. Like all films, it was made for one reason and one reason only--to either make money or lose money based on what the accountants and lawyers who run the world decided that day.

Get over it (thanks, Don Henley), and go see Josie again. It will help you lighten-up a bit. This isn't an ISIS attack we are talking about here, even though I do admire the passion you displayed in your comments.

Cheers!

She didn't write Crimson And Clover either but this is also common knowledge.

reply

I knew Joan Jett did a lot of covers, though they usually were awesome. For example, I think everyone knows Crimson and Clover is a cover. But while the original 1969 song is a classic, I think she improved it (for one thing, I never liked how it drags on for five minutes and ends with it sounding like he's singing underwater).

Anyway, it is not common knowledge that she did not write ILRAR. Because unlike Crimson and Clover or Dirty Deeds or Have You Ever Seen the Rain, the original version of ILRAR is not a classic. I didn't know about it until recently and looked up the original. Jett's is better. Not just because it's a woman instead of a man, but because her energy level seems a few dozen notches higher.

Onto other points in this thread:

1) I agree that Lita Ford got shortchanged by the movie.

2) The best part of this movie was Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley. Anybody who doesn't acknowledge that must have slept through the best scenes in the movie (when he teaches Cherie how to sing, the movie reaches greatness, if so ever briefly).

3) The real Cherie Currie is a terrible singer. So much so that Dakota Fanning's marginal talents are superior. We liked Cherie Currie because the music was good and she was backed by some amazing talent like Joan, Lita, Sandy, etc. Criticizing Fanning for not being a great singer when playing Cherie is laughable. Also, I thought she did well in the film, as did Stewart. The script was just so by-the-numbers, they weren't allowed to really explode off the screen, in my opinion.

reply

Lita Ford didn't get shortchanged. She didn't want to have anything to do with the movie.
