We'll never know what happened to Olivia on the boat, but there WAS a riddle involving a boat which was never solved. Here's the answer---7 trips:

Shepherd ferries sheep to other side, leaves wolf and cabbage.
Rows back alone.
Shepherd ferries back cabbage.
Leaves cabbage and ferries back sheep.
Leaves sheep and ferries back wolf.
Rows back alone.
Ferries back sheep to rejoin wolf and cabbage.
