Ages, setting
Truthfully, I skipped parts of this movie, but what caught my attention was at the end,, as I didn't hear it before, was that this was a high school. I've scoffed at the last time I said it would have worked better in the college setting, but hear me out. I understand that the people arguing with me before in other shows was that it wouldn't work for a few reasons in a college setting, the strongest one would be that they would have their own lives and their parents wouldn't have that much control over them.
I'm going to rebuff that, because if the parents are paying for pricey performing arts school, they're going to have a lot of say in what their children decide to do. Also I don't think there's a lot of dorms at those kinds of schools, so they'd be living with their families anyway, and unless they're really fortunate and there are dorms, they might as well live with their families as most people going to a fancy performing arts school would be living in New York anyway.
Also, not sure if this holds true in real life, but all the drama movies about dancers and performers have those kids so dependent on their families emotionally as well. Those parents have been pushing their kids since birth to do what they want them to do, and at the school they learn independence from their parents and are able to make their own choices and tell the parents that as well. In the meantime however, they're going to cow-tow to their parents wishes and if they do raise up the issue, will back down right away again. Again, what movies have taught us on this one, not real life, as we're talking about a movie doing the same thing anyways, just in the wrong age group.
The ONLY thing I'm going to say to support this being in high school is this: dancers start young, so it makes since that they'd forgo the normal high school setting to go to one more focused on their craft. I get that, and that some students are older than others without being too old and there are performers in all crafts that are younger than high school age, but the actors were too old for the parts, and how some of them got into some of those clubs... without the support of the school...?
