He had battled lifelong depression according to what I've read.

i just watched this movie and did not do any research afterwards BUT throughout the movie, to me he seemed a bit.... mentally challenged? like he's not all good upstairs. he acted like some kid or something.
also i think he had a problem with alcohol and was obsessed with Milk.
