Disappointing cars

When Brian said "all of them" to the three cars he chose, i kept hoping for the 2 other nissans instead of the now boring blue skyline. Nope, when the blue skyline explodes, they steal a even more boring Mazda (?).

I was hoping for a hot-car-feast, instead we get a couple of nice muscle cars, and 1-2 so-so imports, the rest is utter crap.

reply

First, Even though I value your opinion on this part of your post It shows your not a true car fan. If you were you would realize The Nissan brian drives is a god amongst import cars.

Second the car that they steal isn't a mazda! An so I do not value your opinion. Nuf Said.

reply

Well, i perfectly know the Nissan Skyline GT-R, but seeing as it was used in 2f2f, it would have made more sense to make him drive the new Nissan GTR, especially considering he says he'll take it, when choosing cars.
The only reason i can think of is a limited moviebudget.

Secondly, the question mark in the parenthesis was to show that I wasn't sure of the car manufacturer, but it looked a lot like a styled Mazda 3. You don't seem to know either, otherwise I'm sure you'd wipe my face with it. It was a Subaru Impreza hatchback btw.

reply

it's a Subaru Impreza WRX STI and those things are amazing by the way. They're a tuner's wet dream. Some of the best rally car drivers in the world drive one. Ken Block used to drive them before he switched sponsors (he now drives Ford Fiesta) Have you seen Pastrana do the Red Bull Jump on New Years Eve in the Impreza? He jumped over 250 ft with that thing. The world record.

A front wheel drive Mazda 3 has nothing on this car. Just because it doesn't look like your typical coupe import doesn't mean it sucks. I praise them for picking a car that loser fanboys won't think "ohh it looks so cool and fast!" Performance is what matters.

reply

I did see that jump, but didn't remember the car.
I created this thread because i thought it was a shame, that he says he wants 3 cars, but in the end only drives the Skyline, which i think is getting a bit repetitive. I know they're amongst the favorite choices, but a GTR had been suited better, as it's a great new car.

And in general I felt the cars we're a bit lackluster, even though the Gran Torino was a great choice - not often you see it in a movie like this.

"Performance is what matters." In real life yes, but since we're not driving them, and the movie didn't showcase much driving apart from CGI tunnels, we only have the looks to base our opinion on (the Subaru, that is).

I'm a bit surprised by the hostile tone here, i guess i am a loser fanboy.

Btw, the Mazda 3 was the one that looked like it the most from what i remembered. And you can mod it to have rear wheel drive or 4x4 (but you wouldn't get much drifting cred with a 4x4 :P)

reply

I'm not giving you a negative tone. I am sorry if it came out that way. I just think that they made a good choice picking the Subaru instead of the usually FR layout import 2 seater. It's quite annoying after people watch these movies and fantasize about how great a Supra is. The movie did not showcase enough driving which is a shame since they had such a good rally performance oriented vehicle as one of the main cars. I didn't really like the movie very much but felt like I should defend the Subaru. I think it looks good IMO and I'm happy that ricers/gangsters frown upon its looks. More reason to love it.

And yes you can modify a Mazda 3's drivetrain but it's like you're throwing away your money. Practically no one does this except when they need to showcase stunts with a particular car because it's damned expensive. Might as well just buy another car.

reply

Ccx,

Same here, sorry if I came off negative. I had a really bad day =)I just get a little fustrated when perople post comments when they know nothing about the movie they are watching. I can see, when I reread your post, I jumped to that conclusion with you. My bad!

Your absolutely right about the GTR Its a sweet car but I too would have loved to see Brian rock a different one this time around. It was a little disapointing but then again he did get to drive the STI for the remainder of the movie. Also that first race was simply awesome! The part where the BMW starts flipping out of control was a great addition.

reply

Also, you have to take into consideration the target audience. Chances are the target audience won't think that it looks cool to see Brian use the paddle shifters on the GTR.

reply

i would take a R34 over a new GTR anyday. GTR are crappy looking compared to the perfect r34

reply

Why? With the R34 you can only get it in right hand drive, and there is no way to convert them. The price that you spend on getting the car imported and smog and safety checked plus the car will be astronomical. As well as finding a company that will do the conversions. If the company that you use doesn't steal your money or the car first. Example, the one in the movie is now missing and was part of a huge bust on a company that was importing GT-Rs and lying about fixing them for stateside use as well as extortion, look up the 0-60 mag article about motorex. That being said, it is a true classic and is the original godzilla but finding one that hasn't been modded to hell and beat to hell is going to be a real task. AKA a perfect one. Looks are subjective and obviously you have a point, the r34 is great looking, and the new one is an acquired taste.

The new GTR is a completely different animal, hosts amazing technology and is an amazing car. Almost every month the car mags would keep trying to find a car to beat the GTR in an all around test. Reliable and fast, will out handle and out pace a R34 stock to stock any day of the week.

2009 Nissan GTR R35

Nissan GT-R R34
0-60 4.9 sec

Personally I would take the reliability and performance of the new one over all the pitfalls of the r34. Cobb tuning has been working on performance parts and already have a GTR in the 10s with just an accessport and tune.

reply

I'm pretty sure the one in the movie wasn't even an R34. It was like a crappy diesel car with a skyline body. I could be wrong though.

The GTR is a good car but there isn't much of an aftermarket for it. Probably because you're already buying into a great car. The GTR's body is designed to channel airflow into different places. A lame bodykit would ruin that. The suspension is already good on the GTR so nothing to change there. The tires should not be changed because they already outfit the GTR with special nitrogen filled ones with the rims holding the rubber in place. You could do an AP tune like you said but in a movie all about customization and modding that's not enough.

The GTR is a supercar not a tuner's car.

reply

Completely agree. GTR is walking in the area with Lambo's, Ferrari, Porche ect.

At the end of the day. The movie was to represent the "scene" side of things and appeal to the younger generation and the "ricers". R34 would win on looks everytime against a GTR.

I was disappointed not to see a euro car in there, German based of course...being a UK lad myself. I'd love to have seen an Audi RS4, VW Golf R36 tuned to the nuts with a duel turbo set up and serious suspension mods.

The "crappy diesel car with a skyline body" was just one of many stunt cars they used. It was used for the desert scenes so it could survive jumping over dunes. I beleive it was a VW rail buggy.

The Real Skylines were Kaizo GTS's, as in RWD Skylines and not the AWD V-Specs like the car is portrayed.

It doesn't matter if it has 3000hp, it's a hatchback and anyone who gets excited over a hatchback is either half blind or wants a car to go to the supermarket in.

Oh good, because all the good rally cars in WRC are hatchback. Too bad idiots like you keep the trunk alive. There is no point to trunks. It messes up the drag coefficient. The reason they went hatchback was for aero purposes because all the hatchbacks in WRC were owning the Impreza. It doesn't matter how big your wing is, on a sedan you will get less downforce than a hatch. The hatch has more downforce giving it better grip and handling in the turns. But oh you think it's for the supermarket. Notice that most sports cars have an incredibly short trunk. Why do you think that is? Because it's a hindrance. and doesn't push the air in the right direction.

reply

Hatchbacks are typically much uglier than the sedan counterparts and evoke images of family rounds to the supermarket. The latter can be removed but hatches are still ugly looking.

Even if an ugly car wins the race it's still ugly.

The old Impreza looked like a family saloon with a bunch of crap taped to it.

Now it gets mistaken for a Mazda 3.

Impressive.

lol Guy was an idiot. The new suby is good looking, so is the Ford Focus RS, and the old EK9 civic or the Volkswagen Scirocco. You're probably the ones who look at low 2 door scissor door cars and say "waaaw that's awesome, wish i had one". I do agree they look good, but that doesn't mean the hatches aren't good looking.

reply

So i'm an idiot for thinking the Subaru is boring to look at? And for wanting a new car instead of the Skyline. I don't have anything against hatchbacks, but i was dissappointed in the Subarus styling. The focus is indeed a nicelooking car.

That's what he said. So I called you an idiot for mistaking the car for a Mazda3.

reply

Well, in my original post i wrote: "they steal a even more boring Mazda (?)."
Pay attention to the question mark. As far as i can remember, they show no actual closeups of the Subaru in the movie. Being called an idiot for mistaking the two seems excessive. With the styling they could look similar.

I can see how they could quite easily be mistaken.

To me, it doesn't matter what's "under the hood" if the car looks like a generic hatchback, because I like to look at cars as much as I like to drive cars.

The only reason why you think it's ugly is because that's what America thinks of hatchbacks. If you go to Europe and Japan, there are plenty of people who love and think hatchbacks look great. America is stuck in this sedan loving mentality. Even when Subaru announced the new WRX STI sedan everyone in America started complaining about the massive wing on it calling it too ricey and they wouldn't want to be seen with it. Guess what? That's what keeps your butt planted to the asphalt when traveling through a high speed corner. If you don't want a giant wing get a hatchback. If you don't want either, don't buy a sporty car.

I'm not american.

Yes. It's unfortunate. That doesn't mean A) They look good or B) Everyone has to like them, though.

What if I want something that goes fast and doesn't look like total crap?

Whether or not a car looks good is subjective. That's my point. In my opinions sedans lose in both practicality, looks and sportiness. For one thing a trunk does nothing for you on the track it just ruins your aero. It's like a half-assed in between car that doesn't know if it wants to go out and race or if it wants to pick up the groceries. At least with a hatch you have room for your groceries and the aero is better as well.

If you really want something that goes fast then buy a supercar with 2 seats. Practicality goes down the drain but at least you are getting what you desire: speed and performance.

I thought there was a tuned up yellow Mustang in the movie? I'm not sure if that was a Shelby or not...

The only reason those ugly Subarus were even in the movie is because Mitsubishi didn't send them free Evo Xs to be used for production like they have supplied cars for last two movies and Subaru jumped at the chance. Hopefully, next time Mitsu will give them some Evo Xs to destroy, or they'll realize its worth buying them themselves just to not have horrible looking WRX STi hatch that looks like a Mazda 3 in the movie again.

At any rate. The choices for new Japanese cars is getting thin, you really only have the GT-R, Evo, WRX and 370Z to choose from. The RX-8 is a joke and is being discontinued this year. Nissan seems like they have the ability to keep Hyundai from appearing in the movie at all with their Genesis coupe. And the LFA is too expensive and probably won't be available for anything but sitting still and looking, ahem, "pretty." So that leaves "classic" Japanese muscle. I think the R34, Supra and RX-7 have all had enough screen time so they need to have a Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and a Nissan 300ZX TT get some love. The little featurette between 1&2 where Brian had a 3000 doesn't really count.
