I know this forum is several months old, but I came on here wondering the same thing and wanted to contribute.
I was disappointed that they killed Letty off. Not quite walk-out-of-theaters angry (particularly since I was watching in this in my living room), but disappointed. I believe they killed her off because they wanted Dom to have a reason to kick ass. However, I felt her death was unnecessary.
I didn't really find Michelle to be an excellent actress, but I think she did admirably for the role. I felt upset they killed her off because she was pretty much the only bad-ass chick in the whole movie. She stuck by her man, she drove crazy-cool cars, she was street-smart, and was NOT just some substance-less bimbo there to cheer on the guys. Once they removed her, all you had left was men and pretty women used as decoration. They killed off the ONLY badass girl.
I felt similar to this when I saw Transformers 3. I'm impartial to Megan Fox, and understand why she was removed from the trilogy, but I was unimpressed with her replacement. They went from a tough chick who could stand on her own two feet, AND was very knowledgeable when it came to cars, to a complete weakling. I felt Rosie's character ruined the third movie. While she is attractive, I became to irritated with her "all-about-me" attitude, and her overall feebleness. Sam couldn't depend on her like he could with Megan Fox's character.
By no means do I want to bring sexism into this, but as a woman I like seeing and perhaps relating to strong female characters that can hold their own and kick ass, as opposed to the damsel-in-constant-distress.
That is why I was disappointed in killed of Letty. That chick was cool.
