1. It had a more emotional story. I really was surprised about how dark this was, the whole revenge aspect gave it a new feeling for me. If Vin Diesel is good at anything, it's being vengeful. Fast Five was more of your typical action blockbuster, with more fun than emotion. I enjoyed this a tad more.
2. There's actually a street race. Even though it's only one, Fast & Furious made the most of the streetrace. I loved it. The crashes, the cars, the music. It was great. Fast Five didn't show its races.
Other than that...hmm...I dunno, they're kinda tied otherwise. Maybe I'm alone on this, or am I?
I just saw Fast 5 today and I remember really liking this one. So after seeing Fast 5, I looked up reviews for both. I'm shocked to see this rated so low on Rotten Tomatoes, while the 5th one is so much higher.
I completely agree on your first point. That's why I liked this movie. In Fast 5, they wanted to rob the richest guy in Rio because.....? This movie just flowed so much better.
Plus the action in Fast 5 was waaaay over-the-top.
Sure guys, Fast Five didn't have any racing. Fast & Furious didn't have much either. I absolutely hated the fourth movie and I thought the series was done for. When you take any and all racing out of the equation, you have to do something to make the film special, and they didn't. In my opinion, this one was the most overtop with the cave system and all of that crap.
Fast Five revitalized the series by making it a heist film. That's what I liked...if we are five movies in and still focusing on racing, it would be pretty stale. I love that the series has become about the characters and not so much the original subject material. It opens up a lot of opportunities for writers and means the films don't have to go downhill (necessarily) like most other franchises do.
while i generally agree with what the OP is saying i think this film along with Fast Five are about tied overall as some things where better in the 2009 film and some where better in 2011 as i think the 2011's ending left more of a emotional impact on you. but i think the 2009's main action scene late into the film (the tunnel stuff) is not as good overall as the 2011's even if the 2011's was a bit over-the-top. but in terms of the car racing... the 2009's definitely has it beat since it's the only one of the two with any real racing scene (i know they had the 4-way police car race and while it had it's moments the actual racing ain't as good as the 2009's). but it's nice how the films (2009/2011) kind of bring up past things which plays to the nostalgia ;)
i would rate the series like this...
1.The Fast and the Furious (2001) - 7/10 2.Fast & Furious (2009) -.Fast Five (2011) 4.2 Fast 2 Furious (2003) - 6.5-7/10 5.The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) - 6.5/10
p.s. i still need to see 'Fast & Furious 6' (2013)
side note: i used to rank 2 Fast 2 Furious as my #2 film but i just re-watched all of the series (besides the 2013 film which ain't even out yet) from July 16th-July 18th and it dropped a bit for me overall vs what it used to be as while it's still got the fun going for it, it tends to suffer a bit without Diesel etc. but at the same time it was still about what the series started as which was simple fun/racing movies basically which the series mostly drifted away from by the 4th film on forward basically but at the same time i can't blame them too much because you can probably only do that basic racing for so long before it would get old as if they did it, they would have to find a way to keep it fresh.
If Vin Diesel is good at anything, it's being vengeful.
Yep. which is why 'A Man Apart' (2003) is one of his best movies (action or not) as i think it's better than any of the Fast & Furious films.
basically Find Me Guilty (2006)/A Man Apart (2003) are his best movies, then probably Fast & Furious series, then xXx (2002), then The Chronicles of Riddick (2004) etc.
A Man Apart & Find Me Guilty are the films where you can really see Vin's acting skills. For me: I loved the fourth film, it was emotional especially when Letty is "killed" but Fast Five is just as emotional, especially when Vince is killed and I think fans really loved that film because it's really like a homecoming, all the cool characters returning like that, that was awesome.
