Am I the only one who likes this more than 5 and 6?

I love this movie. For some reason though, it gets a lot of hate, and is always considered one of the worst in the series. I for one think it is the third best, behind The Fast and the Furious (2001) and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006).

I love the dark tone of this movie, and am a big fan of revenge stories. Unlike Fast Five (2011) and Fast & Furious 6 (2013), Dom is more human and vulnerable in Fast & Furious (2009), and shows many emotion such as loss, pain, regret. I think it is a more mature movie too, and doesn't rely heavily on ridiculous, over the top, unbelievable action set pieces. I know this movie was the beginning of SuperDom, but the things he does in aren't so ridiculous compared to the two latest movies. Fast & Furious is much more grounded and not so far fetched.

Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 are too light-hearted and cartoonish in my opinion, with no tension. The characters can all do superhuman things now without getting hurt, so you know they can't die, unless they're a villain, or only there for continuity's sake.

In 5 and 6, if Dom can survive getting shot at close range, crashing through walls and glass, flying at 80 miles per hour, driving out of an exploded cargo plane, while his team can survive car crashes and jumping from extreme heights, then why are the producers acting as if the stakes are high?

I agree that Fast & Furious is probably the most character driven movie out of the series. There's actual character growth in Fast & Furious and we see Dom as a real and layered person, not just an invincible, bald superhero.

Fast Five is the best of the sequels, the first 30 minutes are great showing Mia, Brian and Dom on the run in Brazil focusing mainly on them. Then The Rock comes in to make things worst so they call in friends from past movies to perform a massive heist. Its tightly edited, nicely shot and beautifully written, with Justin Lin proving he can direct terrific memorable action scenes.

Lets face it Lin was a better director than Cohen who's original is all over the place but this one (4) had a tighter feel with the characters and I liked it better than the movies that came before or after it. 2 and 3 were average but when 4 came along you finally got the Dom & Paul reunion to bring back some legitimacy to the series that 2 and 3 failed to do.

I like the 4th film but for some reason 5 was better because of the introduction of Luke Hobbs who made the series more interesting.

I am split down the middle when it comes to 4. I can understand how it's the most character driven, I get that. However I think a lot of the character driven moments are brought down with some of the cheese that goes with it, especially the dialogue.

I mean when Mia says something like "Maybe you think are the good guy, but you are the bad guy. You are just a bad guy pretending to be a good guy", or something like that. Lines like that made me cringe, and even though it's the most character driven, 5 and 6, did not have dialogue as corny as that.

I also did like the subplot where Dom is constantly seeking the affections of a new girl, when he is trying to avenge the death of the other one. No one should care about him getting with a new girl, when the story is about avenging a lost love. So I agree that this one is the most character driven, but I feel that it's misguided in that sense.
