The biggest problem I noticed in this film is Tom Cruise's character lack of personality, he seemed like a machine! He talks, he runs, he shoots people that's it, I didn't notice any change of Cruise's facial expression through all the movie I know he supposed to be this "cool spy" but still the Terminator has more character than him.
Madness is rare in individuals but in groups, parties, nations, and ages it is the rule
Sometimes things are not served up to us directly and obviously.
I'm watching it again and this time catch many more nuanced and subtle emotions. First and foremost, he IS a machine. He chose to train very young to me what he is, yet he is still holding on to family connections. He also cracks a few restrained expressions other than the faked happy smile thing, when he is talking with June... actually, many times while talking with her. She is slowly getting to him, and he seems to kind of want that, but also has eyes going in every direction. ... he ponders his life that could have been.
You are not wrong in your opinion or what you see or not, but I see it different.
Good points, stazza. Also it makes sense if the strain of having two (or more) powerful groups of people after him/them keeps him from being able to express emotion -- although as you said, there are times when he's able to relax more thanks to June. His expression of emotion or lack thereof fits situations throughout the story.
yeah, the happy-go-lucky persona was all fake on the surface, as he's emotionally self protected with all the horrible things he had to do and being done to. He was forced into an emotionless killing machine so he wasn't too painful to feel with everyting he's gone through.
