What is up with the SLAP?

The way I saw it, Mike had been teaching her all this time that there is no situation that you cannot escape from and obviously when he ran into her outside, he told her he was quitting. Whether or not he told her it's all a setup is left up to debate, but as it stood, she was disappointed in him because he never seemed like someone who would take defeat so easily, so she slapped some sense into him. Literally, which is why just a few moments later, he charges back in like a rabid bull.
Nice take... I'd have to agree that seems pretty logical. Laura's character had a lot of depth and dynamics to it. The slap did take me aback as it seemed rather assertive for her role. Perhaps it was their relationship too that grew and him helping her and in the end she who helped him.

Graham said it best, the whole tag line should give you a clue.

Yeah that suprised me too. So I turned on the director commentary and watched it again. Mamet confirmed what etangonan said.
And kudos to Firewarrior for understanding that because even Randy Couture who was IN the movie and ALSO on the commentary said he was suprised by that and didnt understand why she did it!

I agree with you. I am always right about everything, so you should be proud. Also, kneel before my greatness.
-Hi. I don't care. Thanks.-

Also take into account that she has a huge problem with touching. That's what made both her slap and her embrace to Terry tenfolds more effecting.
