I thought she was in on it at first but doubted it by the end.

I thought it was because he had told her what was going on with the con fights and he had done nothing to stop it. Thats why he turned round - to do the right thing.

She slapped him because he was telling her that he quit-exactly what he told her that she can't do. She slapped him to wake him up.

She slapped him because he was giving up because it was easier to be quiet than do the right thing. He taught her work the moves and never give up, and here he was, giving up and accepting someone else's will.
