A Question (spoilers)

*** Spoiler Warning ***

I think I figured the film out, but.

Just to clarify, did the cop shoot himself only because he was concerned about bringing disgrace to the teacher and dojo about the watch? Is there anything more I'm missing?

I assume the idea is if he kills himself nobody can make him talk to reveal who he got the watch from. But is a little drama with a stolen watch worth a suicide so distressful to everyone, wife, teacher, everyone else close to him?

Did the cop really have to kill himself, or was that some unfortunate fluke?

He was suspended from the force because they thought he covered up a crime ànd took a bribe to do it. More than a little disgraceful.

From his POV he made 2 very big mistakes :

a) letting a civilian get her hands on his gun.

b) making a bad call on letting the accidental shooting slide.

Especially A was his fault and his fault alone and he could not live with the consequences (for himself and for his master who he respected very much).
