I don't think you are. I like the movie, too, but this line leaves me cold. ...What? More than anything, it's hard to visualize some fight where a guy has a flashlight and just stares into opponent's eyes. I'd rather have, oh, a gun.
I love the movie too, but I have never been able to figure this out. You can learn a ton from Sensei Terry but I always assumed it could be taken literally, as you can blind someone. Or the figurative because you can discern their intentions by looking into their eyes.
It's the figurative meaning. The other way just doesn't make sense. He never says anything about blinding them, just that you can see into their eyes. Like the above poster just said, it's more about seeing what your opponent does before they actually do it.
