The Weinsteins *beep* up the release, plus one other thing
I was listening to the two podcasts on Smodcast (68 and 69) where Smith and Mosier ponder why the movie didn't do the sort of business that the Rogen/Apatow movies did before.
I think they keep harping on 'But our movie is good, why didn't more people see it?' and they gloss over the reason very quickly: Halloween is NOT a time to release a movie like this. I think the Weinsteins are to blame for this, not the filmmakers.... actually, not entirely, the filmmakers should've gone to them and said "Look, Pineapple Express JUST came out like a couple months ago, people like Kevin Smith but they aren't going to rush out THAT soon, and on *beep* Halloween!" Weinsteins didn't do the release justice - they should've taken a risk and waited for the holiday season, when a little more time would've passed and people would be looking for an alternative to like Benjamin Button or whatever came out.
Same problem with Grindhouse - who thinks that releasing a double feature exploitation fest from Rodriguez and Tarantino is a good idea on EASTER weekend? This is a summer blockbuster, or a summer-season blockbuster.
Somehow the Weinsteins in a two year span screwed over as many films from their 90's golden-boy auteurs, regardless of quality.
So there.
