I respectfully disagree. In the Hustler, per the name itself- the goal is to dupe someone less skilled to play for money. Often dumping early games to build the target's confidence until completing the hustle. Beth was the opposite, playing anybody/everybody for the love of the game- and never feigning that she was less skilled than she was. Benny on the other hand, was the character closest to a hustler.

It wasn't just, or even mainly, for the love of the game. It was also first for Beth's much needed confidence boost ( at least here I can win ) and then for the money ( because a girl's gotta live ) and then for the lifestyle and fame ( because who doesn't want to be higher up on the food chain and be admired ).

Now that you mention it, the Hustler isn't even about hustling....the whole story is fast Eddie trying to beat fats...who is admittedly the best pool player in the country....if/ when Eddie beats him, his hustle will be gone..
