Obvious answer: Because then we wouldn't have this storyline.
The less obvious answer is because subconsciously, he didn't want to go through with the wedding, and was using her not answering his calls as some kind of a sign that he shouldn't go through with it. Hypothetically speaking, even if Carrie
did answer the phone the first time he called her, would Big have gone through with it? I honestly don't think so. If she answered and talked him into it, he would have found another "sign" on the way to the venue, because he was
looking for a reason to bail. In fact, his calling Carrie could be viewed as his way of trying to get
her to give him an out. If your fiancé called you the day of the wedding and said, "I don't know if I can do this," what would you say or do? Either way, she was going to be extremely hurt that he was having doubts this late in the game. And it was certainly possible that her hurt would be so great that
she might call off or postpone the wedding herself. I don't think he was calling Carrie looking for reassurance. I think he was calling to tell her - in one way or another - that he
wasn't going through with the wedding. And again, I don't think it was a conscious belief on his part. I think he
thought he just needed to talk to her and he'd be fine. But that wasn't the case.
Regardless of how many times he tried to reach her, or what methods he used, the fact of the matter is, he
did speak to her before the wedding was set to take place. She
did technically reach him "before it was too late", but he had already made up his mind and said "I can't do this." In my opinion, he was at that point long before he actually said the words.
