How will the 2000 election be viewed in the future?

I am watching the movie Recount for the first time, and remember the 2000 election and the whole mess with the chads and everything...
I wonder how the 2000 election will be viewed in say 100 to 200 years from now. I wonder what they'll think of our intentions. Hopefully as was explained to me when I took History in grade school "The greatest flaw in studying History, is that we don't learn from our mistakes." The history of the 2000 election and it's impact on the future is not where we were in 2000 but rather when they look back in the future, how far we've gotten.

I think far into the future, when we have some new type of government or society or whatever, kids will learn about the 2000 election in history class included in the chapter called: "Democracy: One of Many Failed Political Experiments".

It will be viewed as the closest - hence, the most hotly contested, - hence, the most controversial - hence, the most fascinating US election ever.

reply

1876 or 1824 are both at least as controversial as 2000.

reply

Actually, they were more controvetial. But apparatnely that doesn't matter. Anything that happens now has got to be the biggest, the best, the worst, the "most controvertial", in this age of instant history.

reply

It will probably always stand out but maybe not as much as we think. If you ask random people about the 1824 election most people probably won't know.

When all the facts are laid out in order, it will be viewed objectively as what it was -- a bloodless coup d'etat.
