Why couldn't they just count the votes?
It's so simple. How can you be a democracy if you don't count all the votes?

How do you count the votes then? Machine or manually? What about chads? Voter intent? You need to set rules and abide them.
Now I agree, that the american voting system is very flawed, unclear and inconsistent, but in no system a count is "simple"
