Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me clear up a conversation between Nate Fick and Casey Kasem. So when Kasem has sent a bunch of sick guys to check out the bombed out tank, Fick says something like "i have no recollection of anyone waking me" whilst Kasem looks very happy. Maybe it was lost in translation, but I really didn't understand what happened there? Had he been so sleep-deprived he just shrugged it off when Kasem asked, or did Casey Kasem take advantage of the fact that Nate hadn't slept for so many hours and lied knowing Nate couldn't say anything about it? Help is very much appreciated :)
In his own book Fick goes into this incident a little more in detail. What basically happened is that Fick actually was asleep and when Casey Kasem asked him if he would okay the mission he thought he was dreaming.
So Nate was incredibly sleep-deprived at that point and Casey Kasem took advantage of that to task some guys with a useless mission so he could gripe up to Encino Man.
What is more important in that respect is the way Nate handles the incident afterwards. 'Get the *beep* outtahere. You can *beep* with me all you want, but do not, I repeat do NOT *beep* with my men!'
Okey, woow. That makes sense, I thought of that but I couldn't imagine Kasem being that nasty just to score points with command. Clearly I was wrong. What a *beep* douchebag..
That didn't prevent him to have his redemption later in the war where he apparently did some heroic stuff and saved marines (i'm talking about Kasem) edit: now I found the exact event so I'm quoting wiki:
"The Operation Chief for Bravo Company, known only as "Casey Kasem" in the book, later defended himself via a post on his brother's blog, calling the book a work of fiction. He highlighted several passages that he claims were fabricated. The character of "Casey Kasem" in the HBO miniseries is called Gunnery Sergeant Ray Griego, Bravo Company operations sergeant, but his brother revealed that he is actually retired Gunnery Sergeant Daniel J. Griego. In one of the later releases of the book Evan Wright has a couple of pages of what happened since the invasion. He wrote that when the platoon commander had been injured Casey Kasem took over the platoon during the fighting and was able to flank and destroy the enemy. Many members of the unit changed their opinion about him after this incident. He has now retired from the Marines"
He has also published a lot of comments filled with arrogant, immature invective against his fellow marines, so whether or not he did become a hero he has done a great job of proving that he really was a douche.
It's very tempting to categorize people. I watched "Generation Kill" and came here with the intention of writing a post titled: "Casey Kasem is a grade A piece of USDA approved *beep*
And as the character is shown, he is. I won't backtrack on that. But even though the show is based in reality, we're still seeing a reflection of a reflection of a reflection, and It's bound to be distorted. As are more sympathetic characters like Fick and Colbert.
Does any of this mean that Casey Kasem isn't a grade A piece of human excrement? No. It just means *beep* it man, we don't know.
Sadly you are right. I'm convinced everyone that makes it up to the top levels is just as much a douche bag as the ones you know about at the lower levels, they were just luckier douche bags.
