Why did a lot of the soldiers carry tongue depressors(popsickle sticks)?

So why did a lot of the soldiers carry 4 Tongue depressors (pop-sickle sticks) taped together on their molle? I've tried to find the answer and either it was just something stupid the entertainment team did, it was beyond me or it was as mysterious as the Chupacabra. Am I missing something?

I don't recall that, was it the "Doc"?

It's part of the tourniquets they carried/made (looks they they are made from cravats that are issued). They wear/wore them around their neck so they are readily accessible if needed.
