Trombley wouldn't be considered "apart of the xbox/COD generation" because well when the actions of this miniseries were taking place Xbox was only being released.
To take the term "CoD generation" really literally I don't think Call of Duty got big until CoD4 in 07. Before that it was a World War 2 game. That was a long time ago but I think in that era modern war games tended to be more simulation style like the Tom Clancy and Delta Force games and appealing to more of niche market. share
