What was the point of this scene?

The scene on a subway. FBI guy Patrick Denham is reading newspapers and then checking out bunch of fellow passengers and then looking at old asian couple...

I just didn´t get the message of that scene it was so random and short too...

Jordan Belfort told him something about how he never wanted to be like the "poor schmucks" that had to go to and from work on that skanky metro every day working for peanuts. The FBI obviously is one of them. Meanwhile people like Jordan Belfort bend the rules and run wild and free and, even after he is arrested, he won't be part of the metro crowd. He will always be richer than them. The system is rigged in favor of those who abuse it and get rich quick. The FBI agent made a big arrest but he's still stuck on the dirty old metro like the rest of us.

THAT is depressing....

Thought Denham himself mentioned having second thoughts and wondering "what if" as he rode the subway

The movie was just showing us that he was being honest at that moment, and really does wonder whether he should've been a broker instead of broke

I saw the scene as him thinking: "What's the point? I made a rich man poor again and the other poor people aren't any richer for it."

I think there was gonna be a sequel. In the subway, he was thinking about becoming the villainous stockbroker and follow Jordans work
