Gee am I supposed to hate Tess up until the end? I can't tell. :P
There's one thing I really hate in movies and that's being forced to dislike charcters in a movie just because their actions hinder the main character. The writers in this flick were waaaaay too heavy handed in thier efforts to make Malin Akerman's character completely unlikable. This of course left in a spot since I could not connect in any way with Katherine Heigle's character who compulsively accomodates everyone in her life then acts like a martyr and secretly resents them for it.
Of course at the end of the movie we get the sudden revelation that Tess secretly loves and admires her sister and now we're supposed to completely reverse the oppinion which the writer have spent 2 hours forcing upon us.
I would much rather decide for myself how to feel about the characters in the movie. A good example would be Rachel McAddams's character in The Family Stone. She was a bratty little bitch yet there was a charm about her which made her diffuclt not like dispite her behaviour. A Pillidelphia Story is another good example. I couldn't even decide who to like better between Tony Curtis and Jimmy Stewart despite them being opposing love interests.
It's risky making opposing characters in these type of movies not completely unlikable. However, it makes for a much better movie.
