The problem about this movie
The idea about the surrogates is cool, but instead of just letting the concept simply be the basic backdrop for a story, a part of the worldbuilding, the concept instead becomes the story itself. What if the story had been something like "there is a world where people live through surrogates, and then something happens that may or may not be related to this technology, maybe even builds upon it, but is more than just the concept itself". But what we got was "there is this technology that allows people to live through surrogates, but not everybody likes that and think it's wrong, so they use all means possible to put an end to it." And the moral of the story is; use your real body instead or an artificial one. See the difference? Rather than using the idea as a way to do things that would otherwise been impossible in an action movie if using "real" people, they make the whole story to be about the surrogate technology itself. And a story about moral regarding a non-existing technology, with luddites telling us it is not "natural", is not really that interesting.
